Riverglen Marina

Riverglen Marina was the first marina in the southern hemisphere to be certified to ISO 14001. Enviro Action Director, Jean Cannon had implemented the existing ISO 14001 environmental management system while she was subcontracting to another consultancy.

Riverglen is a green business demonstrating its environmental sustainability with ISO 14001.  The tools Jean developed for Enviro Action have substantially simplified their system to make  it more user friendly and has assisted them to maintain this on an as-needs basis. Their main requirement being assistance with their internal audit - always a problem for a small organisation with limited personnel. Recently the system was upgraded to the newly released ISO 14001:2004.

The marina has sewage pump-out to every berth and water testing shows that the water is cleaner when it leaves the marina than when it enters. The value of ISO 14001 was twofold. The certification and testing regimes demonstrate Riverglen's good management to the community including EPA and other agencies and more importantly assisted them to identify their potential environmental impacts and create a simple system that builds in feedback and enhances their very positive environmental management.
