Should we complete long term goals?
|
Tony Abbott, Australia’s opposition leader must have been training for his Ironman event for many months, if not years.
The real question is should we complete long term goals or simply drop them because we are presented with additional challenges?
This has been Tony Abbott’s dilemma. If he simply dropped a goal that big, he would feel like a failure and that would affect his thinking, self belief and ongoing performance. The goal was reached well before he needed to move into election mode and has not impacted on his work performance.
This is a real question for people in business, how do you react to new opportunities when you are close to achieving a long term goal?
Why would you even consider dropping your long term goal that you have worked so hard for?
And another question is how do you react to unexpected illness for you or a family member? Would you really want to feel you had failed in your long term goal when of course you need to devote time and attention to the illness?
Of course you need time to devote to the new situation but for goodness sake DON’t just fail to complete what you already are already committed to.
When I discovered breast cancer, it definitely took my time and attention and I dealt with it to the extent that the specialist said he believes I am completely cured, but I was not overwhelmed, very few of you noticed anything different and I certainly did not lose sight of my long term goal and in fact in a strange way I benefited from the experience and developed a greater focus.
Tony Abbott has set us a truly good example of completing his goal and it will be interesting to watch how he completes his next one. I am confident that the focus he has developed to become an ironman at 52 will serve him well as a leader.
There is real strength in completing something against the odds and that strength is what helps you face the next challenge and do even better than if you had chosen to fail.
The secret to coping with a short term overload or an illness is having systems in place that allow you to leverage your time so that you can do both without dropping into chaos and overwhelm?
Systems are where I can really help you and it does not matter whether your biggest concern is safety, ensuring customer satisfaction or managing your environmental risks or image. The actual systems are essentially the same and differ only in the risks to be controlled in your initial management plan. That is why it is so easy to integrate your risks into a single system.
I believe in keeping things simple so that you do NOT need to take on extra staff to help with this.
Read my next newsletter tomorrow to find out more about how systems can help you plus my usual article round up. If you are open to discussing this further with me, call 1300 88 3646 or SMS 0416 9056 109 to make a time to talk.
My kindest regards,
Jean
