Can you believe people just ignore problems and risks

Most of us prefer to ignore or accept problems that we don’t want to look at, even though these often end up as big costs to our businesses.

This sounds incredible but if you stop and think for a moment

First up you need to determine what the problems are in your business. OK I know – this is a bit of a DUH!  The thing is that it is true for most of us.

And your business is probably like most others and putting your efforts into working around a variety of issues.

To be blunt why would you want to go on having lurking problems that already cost you time and money and could be much worse if human error added onto an existing problem and triggered loss of a client, a large fine or a serious injury?

……………… We’ll loop back to that DUH moment.

The very first thing that I help you sort out is what all your problems are and how severe they are so you can prioritise them.  I have special tools to help you that are far more effective than simply looking around, doing and audit or making a list. Then we identify the most practical resources you need to get rid of each problem.

One issue looming fast is the new Federal occupational health and safety legislation that starts on January 1st 2012 - not very far away.  This will require more evidence of your compliance than you need now and I strongly suggest that you join my OH&S training and get yourself AS/NZS 4801 as soon as possible so that you can prove compliance.

In as short a time as four to five months you will get your problems under control and be ready for certification in your choice of quality, safety or environmental management or even an integrated ISO system.

Because I am restructuring some of my training courses at present I did flag last week that the pricing is going up and Thursday this week is the cut off day for the current prices.  You may see the website price change before the end of Wednesday and if this is the case, contact me direct on 08 8365 9513 because I will hold the price for you until the end of Thursday

And yes, I know you are short of time, you can’t leave the office and you hate paperwork so that is why I have put this training online for you and I have put a lot of effort into helping you minimise paper.

You only need a one hour teleconference one a week and some very easy training files in three formats that you can choose to listen, read OR watch the video and I help you keep your system almost paper free in its daily running.

The big message is …

Don’t go on tolerating those persistent lurking problems that cost you time, money and energy and could escalate with just one simple human error.

Simply get on and fix it with my help and do it now because I have instructions from my accountant to put the price up now.  Here is the direct link and also the link to more information.

I would love to be able to help you.

Client of the week is Stirling Property Services, a large Darwin based cleaning company that passed its audit for a fully integrated iSO system including ISO 9001 quality, ISO 14001 environment and AS/NZS 4801 safety this week.

Tip of the week came from different client in the middle of their audit - don't use the words "shall" or "must" unless this is essential.  I do keep saying this but clients think they look more thoroughif they go over the top with their language.  In fact it leads to a non-conformance if the 'must" is not happening.

P.S.  I have a confession to make.....
I am a caring human with a family and I am passionate about protecting my kids and especially my grandchildren.

Hey, I know that is not what I should say on a business newsletter but I just needed to get it out there in the open because this is why I really add something useful into the current debate and confusion about a carbon tax.

And yes, many of you are really too busy to be bothered until you know how government action will afect your business - but...

How would you feel if the science is right and all the pollution we are pumping into our atmosphere really is damaging our weather patterns, changing the ocean currents, increasing severity of storms and even causing larger and more frequent earthquakes?

Just stop and imagine the future when you are telling your kids that you didn't do anything to prevent the changes because you weren't sure if they were real.  Can you afford to take that risk?

P.P.S. If you want to discover more about how I could help your business and get started on reducing your risks and hassle, why not book in for Quickstart Blueprint Consultation.  You will receive a questionaire about your business so fill it in and send it backso that I am up to speed with your business and am able to give you very real value in your consultation.

How do you manage fatigue?

Two stories about fatigue were in the news this week. Fatigue has a very similar impact on our performance as excessive alcohol.

In the first one, yet another air traffic controller in the USA was found on the job due to fatigue.  One isolated incident is an issue but several cases is a real problem that needs the root cause investigated and removed.

The second is the report from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau

Completely Bizarre

One of the divers at an aquaculture company based on Eyre Peninsula arrived at work affected by alcohol and was allowed to get on board the boat to sleep it off in the cabin while the rest of the crew went out to the cages of fish to do their regular maintenance.

His workmates should have prevented him from getting on the boat.

Scary Stuff

We all know that we have to control chemicals at work and have MSDS sheets for everything but what do you do at home?

Have you ever looked at the labels on the products you keep and use in your kitchen, bathroom, laundry and dressing table?  There are no MSDS sheets

Carbon Confusion

I know enough about the science and also about the integrity of those climate scientists that I know personally to be convinced that we can expect increasing extreme weather, stronger coastal surges and earthquakes if we continue to pollute our atmosphere and I would not want to look my kids in the eye and say I didn’t bother to do anything to prevent the problems.

However I am realistic about the difficulty involved in sorting out what to do.  This is like other business decisions only scaled up because running Australia is a large business operation.

We need to be thinking first about the outcome we want to achieve and while Australia does have a very small comparative impact we will not be able to continue to emit more greenhouse gases per head than any other country on the planet without suffering political and trade consequences.

Qantas is already having to pay additional levy’s when they land anywhere in the EU because we do not have a carbon scheme here so they are seen as having an unfair advantage over other airlines.  This sort of consequence will grow.

After deciding outcomes, and apparently our desired outcome is only 5% reduction of emissions, we need to decide on the resources and timelines to achieve that outcome.  This is where it gets complicated because the resources must result in sustainable businesses across industry sectors even if some of those resources are methods of scaling down and gradually closing some industries...................read on
