Note from Jean
The media is dominated by the economic doom and gloom.  Everyone is paying slowly and people are being laid off work.  Doom and Gloom seems to be obsessing everybody apart from my cat who is just grumpy because I went to Sydney on Wednesday and failed to return until the next day.  She is only concerned about her stomach and having me on hand.

This is not going to get easier in a hurry and while Australian Treasury modelling is fairly optimistic about how the emission trading will impact on business, the bookkeeping flowing down the supply chain from the Emission Trading Scheme will hit almost all of us and small business is not on the Government radar in any of the discussion papers.  Nicholas Stern who wrote the UK Stern report came out this week to say that the current economic crisis is small compared with the result of ignoring climate change

My personal take on introduction of emission trading is that is does not have to be expensive because there are opportunities to make significant savings.

Treasury modelling approves the Emission Trading Scheme (ETS)

The Australian Climate Change Minister, Penny Wong stated that “All the way along we have said that taking action on climate change is the economically responsible thing to do, and this modeling which we will be releasing in detail tomorrow confirms that that is the case.  We can take action on climate change but also retain a strong economy, and in fact we would anticipate that the modeling will show that there are significant opportunities for Australia if we do take action on climate change.

Stern words on climate and the economy

The economist who famously said the cost of doing nothing about climate change would be far greater than the investment required to address the problem, now says the global economy will face a more severe downturn than the current financial crisis if it fails to halt climate change.

Wal-Mart going “Green”

Walmart is requiring manufacturers in China to adhere to stricter ethical and environmental standards and will impose audits on its suppliers. By next year, Wal-Mart will start keeping close track of the factories from which its products originate, even if they pass through many hands and by 2012, Wal-Mart suppliers will need to to source 95 percent of their production from factories that receive the highest ratings in audits of environmental and social practices.

Tackle climate change and boost economy

New consumer research found that most Americans say tackling climate change will boost the economy, and, despite the crisis on Wall Street, they are more committed than ever to taking action, even those who feel financially worse off.. Climate change is also seen as a more pressing issue than it was last year.

Why Agriculture is Difficult to Include

Agricultural emissions can’t be measured with the necessary certainty but a new paper from  the Australia Institute says that agriculture shouldn’t be let off the hook and should be encouraged to adopt best practice methods of emissions abatement now.  There is an inherent variability of agricultural emissions.

UK sets 80% emissions reduction by 2050

Scientists say we need to reduce greenhouse emissions by 50% now and 80% by 2050.  The UK have made the commitment to reducing emissions by 80% by 2050 and includes the aviation and shipping sectors.  They have been congratulated by UNICEF

Arctic melt prompts historic methane rise

Methane is more than 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas and it’s rate of emission has risen for the first time in eight years, prompting concern about the pace of climate change.  This is  in part due to release of gas in and near the Arctic.
