Energy Management Systems To Increase Profits - Enviro Action

Case Studies : Energy Management : ISO 14001 : Green Business

These are the stories of a few of the businesses that have taken the simple steps to green their business and increase their profits.  They think about their activities in terms of cause and effect and build systems to manage potentially harmful effect.

Seafood Industry Winners 2009
On May 8th 2009 the South Australian Seafood Industry held its biennial awards dinner.  What a night for some of my clients!  Of the 9 awards, three were won by my clients or former clients.  And I was a finalist in two awards - pipped at the post in one by a client!

Group of Dryland Farmers A group of 5 Queensland farmers and their agricultural consultants completed the three training modules for ISO 14001. For Modules 2 and 3 the group were joined by the owner of a quite large Darwin based cleaning company doing ISO 9001.  Having a mix of industries and some people who do not know each other was helpful in expanding the participant’s view points.

Training groups of businesses
Enviro Action runs training in ISO 14001 for a variety of businesses working together in groups.  The groups have included pest control companies, printers, cleaners, registered training organisations, building contractors, farmers, turf growers, fishers, stock feed manuafacture, abalone growers and more.  It is really interesting when I find a subcontractor who does a lot of work on building sites and a building contractor in one group because they are really able to help each other!  There are many example of similar synergies happening between businesses separated by many thousands of kilometers and in different time zones.

Spencer Gulf
The Spencer Gulf Kingfish farmers, together with the Seahorse Farm at Port Lincoln, have completed the work of implementing ISO 14001 as part of the National Aquaculture Project.

Australian Prawn Farmers
Enviro Action is working with the Australian Prawn Farmers Association to implement an eco-efficiency agreement, which involves annual benchmarking surveys on each farm, public environmental reporting, case studies and a group of five farms implementing a voluntary ISO 14001.

Riverglen Marina

Riverglen Marina was the first marina in the southern hemisphere to be certified to ISO 14001. The marina has full sewage pumpout and waste management plus a potable water supply to every berth. Retaining reedbeds and preventing discharges results in water leaving the marina basin cleaner than when it entered.

Dover Fisheries
Dover Fisheries is an abalone cannery, processing, canning and exporting abalone from Australia and New Zealand. They added ISO 14001 environmental management to their existing ISO 9001 quality system. They integrated it all with their HACCP system.

Tuna Farmers
Most of the tuna farmers have implemented OH&S and in fact due care for their workers is their main driver. Their systems are fully integrated and include AS/NZS 4801, ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 plus most also have on vessel HACCP.

Adams Pest Control
Adams Pest Control added ISO 14001, ISO 22,000 (food safety) and occupational health and safety to their existing ISO 9001 quality system. They were the first pest control business in Australia to have quality and now they are also the first to add food safety to consider their food retail and manufacturer client needs.

Adam & Amos

Adam & Amos Abalone Foods have a clear but simple vision, to produce the best quality abalone food in the world. They are implementing a fully intgrated management system.

Bight Abalone
This is a case where one of the most environmentally friendly aquaculture processes in the world is being threatened by a small group of people on supposedly environmental grounds. They are establishing their environmental credentials and also building a fully integrated management system.

Port River Marine
Port River Marine Services, a well known slipway and boat building business in Adelaide is currently undertaking Quality ISO 9001, EMS - ISO 14001 and OH&S AS/NZS 4801.

Humpty Doo
Humpty Doo Baramundi implemented ISO 14001 as part of a group of Barramundi farmers in northern Australia. The have added quality and safety working remotely. They have found the modular approach helpful with this.

Lamb EMS Group
The Barooga Lamb EMS Group has been funded by the Natural Heritage Trust (NHT) to develop an EMS program. They had previously done a lot of work on environmental issues on their farms and had a good understanding of their legal compliance requirements but they had not been involved in a systematic approach to EMS
